Overview
CredSafe is a self-sovereign, privacy-first civic identity wallet built for the DevDay Exchange Community Metro Hackathon: Pune. It enables citizens to own, manage, and selectively share their verifiable credentials using W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials (VCs), anchored on the Algorand blockchain. Traditional digital identity systems rely on centralized authorities to store and control personal data, leaving citizens vulnerable to data breaches, identity theft, and a loss of autonomy. For a smart city like Pune, citizens need a secure, portable way to prove eligibility for services without handing over unnecessary personal details. CredSafe implements the "Triangle of Trust" (Issuer → Holder → Verifier) with a local-first approach: Self-Sovereign DIDs: Users create and control their own Decentralized Identifiers (e.g., did:algo) anchored on Algorand smart contracts via a DID Registry. Verifiable Credentials: Trusted institutions (universities, employers, municipal bodies, transport authorities) can issue cryptographically signed W3C VCs to citizens. Local Wallet: Credentials are stored locally on the user's device (Zustand persist), ensuring no central database holds citizen data. Selective Disclosure: Citizens choose exactly which attributes to share when a service requests proof. Using SD-JWT and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK-SNARKS), they can prove facts like "age > 18" or "valid metro pass holder" without revealing the underlying documents or exact details. Civic Verifier Portal: Municipal departments, banks, employers, and transit authorities can request verification and cryptographically validate proofs without accessing full credentials.
